Patio & Outdoor
Concrete Coatings

Exterior concrete faces conditions a garage floor never sees. UV, freeze-thaw, deicing chemicals, and mechanical contact from snow removal all demand a different approach.

Coat Goat installs exterior-specific coating systems for patios, walkways, steps, and other outdoor concrete surfaces in the Twin Cities metro and Sioux Falls, SD area.

The Difference

Why Outdoor Is Not a Garage

A garage floor is installed in a controlled environment. It is protected from direct sunlight, rain, snow, deicing chemicals, and most mechanical abuse. The coating system is selected for interior conditions.

Outdoor surfaces face the full force of Minnesota and South Dakota weather. A coating that performs well in a garage may not be the right choice for a patio, walkway, or steps. Exterior coating selection is about exposure and maintenance, not just chemistry.

Coat Goat Field Experience

We have seen surface damage from motorcycle kickstands, repeated shovel contact, and concentrated loads on exterior coatings. This experience informs how we evaluate and recommend outdoor systems.

The Elements Exterior Coatings Face

Each factor below affects coating performance independently. A product that handles one well may not handle another. This is why we evaluate your specific surface and exposure before recommending a system.

UV Exposure

Sunlight breaks down certain coating chemistries over time. Aromatic resins are more susceptible to yellowing and chalking. Aliphatic resins offer better color and gloss retention. UV stability is a property of specific products, not a chemistry category. Always check the Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for the actual products used.

Freeze-Thaw

Water enters micro-cracks in the concrete, freezes, and expands. This is a concrete problem first, not just a coating problem. The coating needs to accommodate substrate movement, and the concrete itself needs to be in sound condition before coating.

Water & Ice

Exterior surfaces see standing water, runoff, and snowmelt. Drainage and slope matter as much as the coating. Water that pools against a coated surface will find any weakness. Proper water management around the coated area is essential.

Deicing Chemicals

Salt and chemical deicers are aggressive. They can affect both the coating surface and the concrete beneath. Chemical resistance is product-specific. Check the TDS for the actual products used, and follow the manufacturer's maintenance guidance.

Snow Removal

Snow shovels, ice scrapers, and snow blowers bring mechanical contact. Repeated scraping or chopping can damage a coating over time. The coating's resistance to mechanical damage matters here, not just its chemistry name.

Concentrated Loads

Motorcycle kickstands, patio furniture legs, and dropped items place concentrated loads on small contact areas. Coat Goat has field experience with surface damage from kickstands and repeated shovel contact. The coating's resistance to point loading is a real-world factor.

Exterior System

SureCrete RESIST System

For certain exterior applications, Coat Goat works with the SureCrete RESIST system. RESIST is a two-component epoxy sand overlay designed to restore, enhance, and protect existing exterior concrete.

According to SureCrete's product documentation, RESIST provides slip resistance through an integrated specialty aggregate layer, is designed for freeze-thaw flexibility, and is formulated to resist deicing chemicals. The system is rated for non-vehicular surfaces (walkways, patios, pool decks, steps) and vehicular surfaces (driveways, parking structures) with appropriate application methods.

RESIST is available in eight colorways: Armorstone, Goldmine, Silver Fox, Charcoal, Shadow Slate, Sorrento Red, Spring Beige, and Westwood Brown.

Verify Before You Specify

Manufacturer performance claims should be verified against the current Technical Data Sheet (TDS) before any project-specific specification. Product formulations change. Coat Goat evaluates each surface individually and recommends the right system based on site conditions.

Surface preparation requirements per SureCrete's TDS include mechanical profiling to CSP #2-3, crack repair, and proper cleaning. The finished surface can accept foot traffic after 12 hours and vehicular traffic after 48 hours, per the manufacturer's documentation.

Why Chemistry Alone Doesn't Guarantee Outdoor Performance

A product name or chemistry category does not tell you whether a coating will perform on your patio. The concrete condition, surface preparation, drainage, slope, climate exposure, and maintenance practices all matter as much as the product itself.

A properly installed system on well-prepared concrete can outperform a premium product on poorly prepared concrete. This is why Coat Goat evaluates each surface before recommending a system, rather than specifying by brand name alone.

Surface Preparation

Exterior coating projects follow the same mechanical preparation standard as our garage floor installations. We mechanically profile the concrete surface to create the correct surface profile for adhesion.

Cracks, control joints, and surface damage are addressed before coating. Existing sealers or coatings must be removed or tested for compatibility. For exterior slabs, a moisture evaluation may also be recommended.

Prep Is Not Optional

Companies that skip mechanical grinding and apply coating over unprepared concrete produce surfaces that peel or delaminate. Our process starts with proper surface preparation, every time.

Honest Limitations

We will not tell you that any outdoor coating is immune to damage. Here is what to realistically expect:

No outdoor coating is shovel-proof. Repeated scraping with metal tools will damage the surface over time. Use plastic or rubber-tipped shovels.

No coating is scratch-proof. Patio furniture, dropped items, and concentrated loads can mark the surface.

No coating makes concrete immune to freeze-thaw damage. If water enters and freezes in the concrete beneath the coating, the concrete can still deteriorate.

Proper maintenance and care extend the life of any exterior coating. We discuss maintenance expectations during your estimate.

Maintenance Expectations

Treat coated exterior surfaces as finished surfaces, not raw concrete.
Use plastic or rubber-tipped snow shovels. Avoid metal blades and ice choppers.
Sweep debris regularly to prevent abrasive wear.
Address drainage issues promptly. Standing water affects any coating over time.
Re-sealing or maintenance coats may be needed depending on exposure and wear.
Discuss specific maintenance expectations during your estimate.

Common Questions

Can you coat my patio with the same flake system you use in garages?

Garage flake systems are designed for interior, controlled environments. For exterior surfaces, we evaluate whether a flake system or an exterior-specific system like SureCrete RESIST is more appropriate based on your surface, exposure, and maintenance expectations. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Will the coating survive Minnesota winters?

A properly installed exterior coating can perform well through freeze-thaw cycles, but no coating makes concrete immune to freeze-thaw damage. The concrete condition, drainage, and maintenance practices all matter. We evaluate each surface before recommending a system.

Is the coating waterproof?

Coatings are water-resistant, not waterproof. Standing water, poor drainage, and moisture vapor drive can all affect coating performance. We assess drainage and moisture conditions during the estimate and address any issues before coating.

Can I use a snow shovel on the coated surface?

We recommend using plastic or rubber-tipped shovels and avoiding metal blades or ice choppers. Repeated scraping with metal tools can damage any coating over time. Treat a coated exterior surface as a finished surface.

Do you coat steps and walkways?

Yes, but steps and step edges are high-stress areas that require careful evaluation. Traction, edge profile, and exposure all factor into the system recommendation. SureCrete RESIST is one option we use for exterior walkways and steps.
