Urethane Flooring Technology
Compare a proposed urethane finish by its documented role, compatible system and exposure requirements.
Talk through your facility's requirementsWhat a urethane finish can do
A polyurethane coating can be used as a finish over compatible resin flooring. For example, Sika describes Sikafloor-315 N as an aliphatic polyurethane coating for overcoating epoxy or polyurethane substrates, with wear-resistance properties and gloss or textured finish options. Those are characteristics of that specific product, not a guarantee for every urethane coating. [U1]
Match the finish to the facility
Tell the evaluator about wheeled traffic, cleaning products, likely spills, sunlight and wet areas. Ask which exact product and underlying layers are proposed. A thin finish coat and a cementitious flooring system are not interchangeable specifications; ask which type is being discussed.
See our Commercial Urethane Floor Coatings page for the existing service overview.
Questions before installation
- Is the finish compatible with the existing floor and proposed underlying layers?
- What surface preparation and recoat conditions apply?
- What evidence supports suitability for this facility's chemicals and traffic?
- How will the finish texture, cleaning plan and return-to-service schedule be selected?
Limits worth understanding
Texture is not a promise of a slip-proof floor. Sika reports different wet and dry friction results for different Sikafloor-315 N finishes and warns that its UV-blocking coating may not completely prevent discoloration beneath it. Evaluate the complete system and actual exposure. [U1]
